Shirley C. Tucker Herbarium: A Past and Future Hub for Louisiana Botany
A Virtual Lunchtime Lecture by Dr. Laura Lagomarsino and Jennifer Kluse
The Shirley C. Tucker Herbarium at Louisiana State University recently doubled in size with the integration of several regional herbaria, including a repatriation set from BRIT of the University of Louisiana Monroe Herbarium (NLU). Speakers will give an overview of the collection and discuss its support of current research. Replete with historic specimens from Tulane University Herbarium and a new director, the scope of the herbarium has markedly expanded to include precious early Louisiana collections as well as a greater geographical reach into the tropical Americas. Laura Lagomarsino is the Director of the Shirley C. Tucker Herbarium and Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at LSU. She has a PhD in Organismic and Evolution Biology from Harvard University and a BS in Genetics and Plant Biology from UC Berkeley. Her research has taken her on field expeditions throughout mountainous Latin America in search of bat and hummingbird pollinated plants. She is an advocate for the importance of collections in research and diversity in STEM.
Jennifer Kluse is the Shirley C. Tucker Herbarium Collections Manager. She has a background in a plant ecology and conservation with a master’s degree in from UC Berkeley. While her family makes an annual migration to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory each summer, traversing a diagonal line through Texas, to sample field plots of plants and lichens, her primary habitat is in the climate-controlled recesses of the LSU’s herbarium from where she imagines the former longleaf pine savannahs and Gulf Coast marshlands while filing specimens.
