Rainy weather and want to know if our monthly Art in the Garden tour is happening? Just call the Garden Center at 817-463-4160 (option 6).  The decision to cancel is made by 8 am the day of the tour. 

Explore and delight in our campus, which features 25 distinct gardens as well as collections such as the Begonia Species Bank, which is the largest species begonia collection in North America. The BRIT building features our herbarium, exhibitions highlighting our worldwide research projects, and our library and special collections; tour this LEED platinum certified building!

Self-Guided Tours

BRIT Building

  • Self-guided tours are available during regular working hours, Monday – Friday (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Visitors are encouraged to walk the grounds to experience our pocket prairie, pollinator pathway, special exhibitions, and unique sustainable building features like our bamboo ceilings, sinker cypress wall, living roof, and more. Stop by our Welcome Center to pick up a free map guide, or use one of the digital touring options below. 
    • App Tours: Enjoy exploring at your own pace! Our touring app, BRIT Guide, is available for use on your iOS or Android smartphone. Download the BRIT Guide app and learn all about BRIT with an interactive map and self-guided tour options.
    • Audio ToursLet your headphones be your guide! Use an internet-enabled device to play audio files from your smartphone or download the mp3 files to a stand-alone player of your choice.

Guided Public Tours

Art in The Garden Tour

Our monthly Art in the Garden tour meets at the Garden Center’s Leonard Courtyard (by the fountain) the first Saturday of each month at 9:30 am. Tours are 60-minutes in length, focusing on 4-5 works in our outdoor sculpture collection.

  • Free with membership or Garden admission.
  • There is a limit of 15 participants; first-come, first-served. No reservations are required. 
  • Tours take place rain or shine, barring moderate-to-heavy rain or lightning. If it’s raining where you are the morning of a tour, just call the Garden Center at 817-463-4160 (option 6) to see if the tour is cancelled.  The decision to cancel is made by 8 am. 

BRIT Building 

Learn about BRIT’s research programs, herbarium, libraries, educational programs, and sustainable building.  We are green from the ground up; learn why and how as you take this hour-long tour of BRIT’s very special LEED Platinum home with a trained docent.

  • Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. 
  • Free, but reservations requested for groups over ten.

Guided Private Tours

BRIT Building

Monday – Friday (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) to groups desiring a private tour of the Institute. Please make requests at least 3 weeks prior to your visit. Cost: $8 per person; $7 per member. To schedule a large group or private docent-guided tour, please email or call 817-332-4441.

Art in the Garden Tour

Tour our outdoor sculpture collection with a knowledgeable docent. Enjoy learning more about selected artworks and engaging in conversation. Tours last 60 minutes. A minimum of two people is required per tour, with a maximum of 15 guests. Two-weeks notice is required of all tour requests. In addition to regular admission rates is a $1 per person docent fee.

Begonia Collection

There are more than 1,800 species in the genus Begonia. The Botanic Garden collection contains over 350 species and over 600 hybrids, making it the largest begonia collection in North America. In 2015, the FWBG became the first botanic garden in Texas to receive accreditation for its begonia collection through the Plant Collections Network and currently has the only accredited begonia collection in the nation.

Japanese Garden

Join knowledgeable docents for a guided tour of our beautiful Japanese Garden. Enjoy lovely vistas while docents discuss design elements, history, and the cultural significance of Japanese gardens. Plants and animals found in the garden are also discussed.

Tours generally last 75-90 minutes. Although our docents can modify tour paths as needed, guests should be prepared for mildly uneven terrain and stairs.

A minimum of two people is required per tour with a maximum of 60 guests. (Per docent availability we strive for a ratio of no more than 5 guests per docent). In addition to regular admission rates is a $1 per person docent fee.
