Policies for Use of the Herbarium

In general, BRIT is open for public use by appointment, from 10 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Please contact us beforehand to make sure someone will be available to orient you and assist you if necessary. BRIT is closed on most national holidays.

Tours that do not require access to specimens in cabinets are welcome. Please click on the Visit BRIT link for further information.

Herbarium Regulations for All Visitors

  • A herbarium staff member must be present to have access to the herbarium
  • No smoking is allowed.
  • No food or drink around herbarium specimens.
  • Fresh OR dried herbarium specimens must be declared before entering the herbarium. Dried specimens must receive fumigation/deep-freezing/microwave treatment before entering the herbarium. Leave specimens at reception desk while seeking assistance.
  • If you are unfamiliar with standard herbarium procedures, please read and follow BRIT’s Herbairum Guidelines for General Users below. A staff member will be available to assist with procedures and explain the organization of collections and operations.

In order to provide guided assistance in viewing exhibits and/or touring the facility, it is necessary to call in advance of your intended visit so a staff member is available. Staff assistance is required in order to use the herbarium. Collections are unavailable for use when a staff member is not on site.
